The connection was instantaneous: I dropped the act of being “Managing Director” and was myself, and you matched it. I still remember the exact moment that it happened, in the corner of the Lobby of the Chateau Marmont. ![]() La lumière naturelle, un regard d’aigle et un don de l’introspection dû à son métier d’actrice, sont je pense à l’origine de son talent si personnel. Je comprenais, à quel point la comédienne en elle, contribuait à son travail de photographe. Une anecdote : c’est au cours d’un dîner rue Aubriot auquel participait Jean Seberg que son ami réalisateur Ricardo Franco, trouva le pseudonyme d’Alice Springs. Ensuite le dialogue s’instaurait avec le modèle lui faisant face, et c’est toute la maitrise, le jeu du réalisateur, la psychologie de la comédienne qui entrait en jeu, afin d’obtenir du portraituré, si ce n’est son âme, le plus intime de lui-même. Sans jamais se départir de son calme, de son humour, faisant la conversation, alors qu’elle préparait son pied, cherchait le meilleur endroit pour la lumière, etc… Elle imaginait tel un metteur en scène le résulta qu’elle voulait obtenir. Vers le milieu des années 1970, elle commença à réaliser des portraits, je lui organisais alors des rendez-vous avec des artistes, des personnalités parisiennes, et l’accompagnais aux séances Photographiques. C’est peut-être la raison pour laquelle ,ce soir de Noël 2017, à Monaco, June me demanda d’écrire leur livre, Helmut & June, portraits croisés. » En effet, après avoir reconnu le talent d’Helmut avant les autres, June sera celle qui lui donnera nombre d’idées pour son travail de mode, puis travaillera à ses expositions et ses livres… J’ai souvent pensé, qui serait Helmut s’il n’avait pas rencontré June ? Ayant partagé vacances, travail, amitié avec le couple depuis notre rencontre en mai 1968, il me semble bien les connaître. Je me souviens d’Helmut ne se lassant pas de répéter : « Je remercie June qui toujours entrouvre les portes de mon imaginaire. While her first book was published in 1983, she worked and oversaw Newton´s publication White Women as art director in 1976, and subsequently all of Helmut Newton’s other books and exhibition catalogues. In 1970, after having moved to Paris with her husband, she started her own career as a photographer under the pseudonym Alice Springs, and soon became a well-esteemed published artist herself. In 1956, she was awarded the Australia’s Erik Kuttner Award for best theater actress. In 1947 she met Helmut Newton, who had just set up a photo studio in Melbourne, and married him a year later. Born as June Browne in Melbourne, Australia, in 1923, she trained as an actress and had numerous engagements under the pseudonym June Brunell. ![]()
